SportsTravel magazine named the inaugural National Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship in Gulf Shores its “Best New Event” for 2016, and it happens again in 2017. Featuring 55 sponsoring schools, beach volleyball is the fastest-growing NCAA sport and its 90th championship sport. With an eight-team bracket, the championship will be played in a double-elimination format with teams consisting of five pairs.

UAB served as the tournament host for the first ever NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship in 2016 and will do so again in two weeks in Gulf Shores, Ala. The first-class venue and hospitality provided by UAB and the Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Sports Commission helped keep the championship event in Gulf Shores through 2022. “Gulf Shores is a perfect venue for the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship and we are thrilled to be selected as the tournament host for the first seven years of its existence,” said head coach Ashley Hardee. “Not only will having the UAB name tied to such a great event help us in recruiting, but it gives fans an opportunity to see what an amazing state Alabama is.”

2017 will serve as the second-ever NCAA Beach Volleyball Tournament, with USC looking to defend its 2016 national title.

The tournament selection will take place on Sunday, April 30 in a live selection show on NCAA.com. The tournament combines programs from Divisions I, II and III, with 8 teams selected to the tournament. Who will be taking part? Here’s Volley Mob predictions.
